Pigmy Hippopotumas in Australia

28 November 2002. There is a population of five (1.4.) pigmy hippos in the region
  • Adelaide - 0.2.
  • Melbourne - 1.0.
  • Taronga - 0.2.
Taronga Zoos two females are mother, 33 year oldCleo, and her 29 year old daughter, Katie. Both were born at the zoo and can be seen at the African Waterhole.

The photos were taken at Melbourne Zoo where the Pigmy Hippos are part of the African Rainforest exhibits. Their neighbours are Mandrills and Gorillas. The birds are Egyptian geese. The exibit is designed to simulate a forest track breaking out onto a riverbank. There is an underwater viewing area where you can watch the ballet of graceful hippos.

Melbourne Zoos female Pygmy Hippo, Carolyn, died sometime between July and November of 2002. The animal had arrived at Melbourne Zoo in 1972 at the age of 18 months. She had successfully reared three offspring.
