ASIAN ELEPHANTS IN AUSTRALIA
AND NEW ZEALAND

Elephus maximus
Pop. at 2003. 10(3.7.)
Auckland Zoo (0.2.)
Melbourne Zoo (1.1.)
Perth Zoo (1.3.)
Taronga Zoo (1.1.)

Both species of elephant can be seen in Australia. Three African Elephant (0.3.), are kept at Western Plains Zoo. At the moment ten, (3.7.) Asian Elephants, Elephus maximus, are kept in other zoos. No elephant has been born in Australia or New Zealand as far as I am aware. Elephants appear to be regularly bred elsewhere and this poses the question, 'why not in Australasia?'. It could be because of the conditions that they are kept in. City zoos are by there nature small. These intelligent creatures require both plenty of space and stimulation, something which is difficult for city zoos to do.

The demand by the public to see elephants exists and while it does the city zoos will keep them. My own feelings are that elephants should be kept at Free Range Zoos, where there is space and stimulas for them. Let the public go to these places if they wish to see elephants.
