TRIBUTE TO THE GREATEST LITTLE HORSE

TEQUILA SUNRISE
This is TEQUILA, the greatest little horse. Tequila was born on May 5, 2002 & died August 10, 2002.Tequila broke his leg at 3 months of age and had to be put down. I am writing this with tears streaming down my face for the loss of this little guy. He stole my heart in his short little life and everyone who came in contact with him thought he was the neatest little colt. He had a very loving and awesome personality. He was extremely intelligent, very inquisitive and a dream to work with. He was always so willing to try new things. He was the colt I was going to keep.
Tequila started his traing as a trail horse when he was 2 weeks old. At the age of 4 weeks he went on his first cattle drive. He watched his mom work the cattle for a while, then he started to work the cattle by himself. He would go up behind the baby calves and nudge them with his nose to get them going. If one of the big cows would stop and turn around he would take a run at them until they turned back to the herd, then run back to his mom nickering. He entertained us for the full 10 hour day. When he was 5 weeks old I was helping a neighbour move some cattle in the rain. There was a sick calf that didn't want to move. Tequila got behind this calf and kept pushing it with his nose. The calf kept trying to lay down and Tequila would put his nose under the calf's bum and lift and push, he wouldn't give up and kept that calf moving.Tequila went on at least a half a dozen cattle drives in his short life and never got in the way. Tequila only needed help into a horse trailer once and after that loaded and unloaded by himself in any type of trailer. He only needed about a half hour of halter breaking, then I started ponying him a few days before the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede Parade. He went in the parade and led perfect through the whole parade. He accepted being tied up immediately and never fought it, loved to be groomed and would let me pick up his feet. He even accepted being bathed right from the start. Tequila was turning into an excellent trail horse. He was on quite a few rides in the Cypress Hills going through the trees. He was very careful in the bush, picking his way through the deadfall, he would always take his time and look the situation over very carefully. If he didn't like the route his mother was taking he would take a different route. He would cross creeks and large sloughs of water. We had a flood here in the spring and with all the water laying around we had hordes of mosquitos. Tequila was the only one of our horses that I didn't have to tie up to spray bug spray on. He would come over when he saw me coming with the spray bottle and stand perfectly still while I sprayed one side, then turn around so I could spray the other side, then turn his bum towards me and then his front. Then he would go over to the other horses after they were sprayed and rub himself on them to get more bug spray.
Tequila, I will always love you and miss you. You were the greatest!
