- SILVERCHAIR is a grunge band that exploded the world out of nowhere. Daniel(vocals, guitars), Ben(drums),and Chris(bass) have been good friends ever since their primary school years back when they were still about 5 years of age. The group is based from Merewether, Newcastle, Australia and live minutes away from each other. Ben and Chris used to have a pre-teen band called "short elvis". They didn't have a bassist so they asked Chris to learn how to play the bass. He did and so Innocent Criminals was born together with their fourth member Finnane Tobin but unfortunately his family went overseas so he has to live the band. The band practices at the Gillies Family garage. They use to join small contests but didn't get any luck. One day, Sarah Lawson, a young neighbor of the Johns family, told them about the demo contest called "Pick Me" which is being run by Nomad, a cultish pop-music TV show. The band decided to join the said competition and had their 6 minute track Tomorrow as their entry. There were 800 entries all in all and thier track was picked as the winner. They shot a video for Tomorrow which was directed by Hambling. The video was shot at an old jail in Newcastle for $2,000. John Watson became their manager and the name of the band was changed to SILVERCHAIR. The first big time rock band that the band saw live was the popular Screaming Jets in the summer of 94 where they were the opening act at the Newcastle's Workers Club. Their single Tomorrow became a smash hit not only nationwide but worldwide. At the end of 1994 they recorded their first album FROGSTAMP for four days. The album sold millions of copies worldwide. The band took part on major festivals like the Big Day Out, Peaches 'n Cream Festival, etc. and they won several awards form the MTV to the ARIAs. On 1997, they released their second album FREAK SHOW which was very successful. Despite their busy schedules the band was able to catch up with their studies in fact, they graduated from high school. On the month of June'98, they started to record their third album NEON BALLROOM which according to Daniel is his most personal album so far. The album sales was as good as FREAKSHOW. Today, SILVERCHAIR is having a one year break and i guess that leaves us on waiting for the break to be over before we could hear from them again.
