Adventures and Exploration in Deepest Akiwaya

By Sir Charles Atkinson, KB

The narrator writes : "Akiwaya is a small (largely unexplored) province in Central Africa, sandwiched between German Cameroon and the Congo Free State. Largely claimed for the British by Sir Charles, it is, in its civilised parts showing great potential as an exporter of such African wares as ivory and rubber with a small sprinkling of silver. It is, however, not exempt from occasional colonial skirmishes between rival tribes (on behalf of 'friendly' European powers) and the attentions of Arabic and Indian slave traders, many of whom meet a sticky end at the point of a poisoned dart or the prow of a garishly painted canoe. As a result, the British Government are all behind Sir Charles, in his slow but methodical exploration of the province."

Sir Charles writes : " Akiwaya as a country is a strange mix of the other African colonies. It is a mountainous terrain, interspersed with swamps and lush, green rainforest. Here and there a small native village appears from the undergrowth, with the characteristic, half-spherical huts, roofed with the local, tough brown reeds and grasses. Through the heart of the country flow two rivers, like two large veins, the Umbutu and the Kigali, down which the country can best be explored. Thus it was determined that these two rivers would form the first two avenues of discovery down which I should embark."
