The statue of Vulcan in Birmingham, Alabama
is the largest cast iron statue in the world.
For generations Vulcan has gazed over Birmingham,
first symbolizing the area's Steel City heritage,
holding aloft a newly forged spear point.
Later Vulcan was the guardian of the night,
holding a green lit torch for the city to see
when there had been no deaths in traffic,
but holding up a red torch of warning whenever
someone in the city had been killed in a collision.
Recently the great iron man was completely
restored after weathering decades keeping
watch over the city.
In June 2006, Vulcan will watch over Birmingham
as Spoken Word artists from all over the South
and beyond compete on local stages for the title
of Southern Fried Slam Champion.
Teams and Independent poets from Southern Cities
and farther away will share their stories, their
stuggles and victories, their original poetic
creations in an attempt to get to Saturday's
Final Stage for a shot at the Southern Fried prize:
Moon Pies, RC Cola and a year of bragging rights!
...and some cash too!!
