Chapter 10

   There was a knock at his door. Pete looked up, confused. Maggie didn't tell him there was someone here to see him, and he certainly didn't expect to see anyone soon. Nonetheless, he jerked his head up at the sound of the knock and told the person to come in. He knew it was safe; if the person was out to get him, he wouldn't have bothered knocking and just try to creep in quietly. It wouldn't work, since Pete still had the ears of a dog, but it would have been entertaining to throw the person off.
   One set of footsteps enter the room, and he didn't hear the voice until the doors were closed. "Hi, Pete," the voice said.
   Thorton jumped out of his chair at the voice. He recognized it immediately; his was a hard voice to forget. Pete grinned widely and offered his hand, and the person accepted it.
   "MacGyver!" he shouted. "What are you doing here?!" He was happy to her his friend after so many years. MacGyver had written to him over the years (kindly with a Braille typewriter), telling him what he was doing with his son, but none of his letters said MacGyver would be in town.
   "I was in the mood to fish, and I figured that the docks would be a good enough spot." He knew MacGyver was lying. Not only did his heart rate speed up, but MacGyver used to have a houseboat at the docks; no fish there were allowed to be caught unless thrown back. "I missed you, Pete, and I figured I'd come by and surprise you."
   Pete sat back down in his chair. "I'm surprised all right. I had no idea you'd be here."
   "So how is everything?"
   "Nothing your personal touch couldn't handle." They both laughed. "Everything is fine, MacGyver. Nothing unusually interesting has happened, except for the same old, same old." And then his memory kicked in. "Ah, but there is this one thing. FBI Agents Mulder and Scully came by yesterday for a report concerning that chemical explosion back in '75." He leaned forward on his desk, excited. "I think they could be on the verge of finding Barbara, Mac. They said they were after her son."
   Pete didn't need to see the expression on MacGyver's face to know the man was surprised. "I never knew she had a son."
   "She did; two years after the accident. I had a feeling about those agents, so I let them have the file on her."
   Pete heard the tension in MacGyver's voice as he said, "You mean the one with the attachment file about the Mutation Project?"
   "The very same. Now, before you say anything MacGyver, I did some checking on the two agents. It turns out they deal with paranormal investigation, and that was when my feeling hit me. If they realized the scope of the situation Barbara and her son was in, I think they'll give them to us for treatment. We're very close to a cure, and I believe we can help them."
   The phone rang. Pete picked it up and listened to the voice on the other end. He then said, "I'll get right on it!" and hung up. He turned to MacGyver and said, "That was Agent Mulder. They believe they've found where Barbara may be, and he wants me to provide transportation." He grabbed the phone before MacGyver could object and had the proper people called. He then turned back to MacGyver again and said, "How about it? Will you come with me? For old time's sake?"
   There was a pause, then MacGyver said, "You're turning into Jack."
   Pete held his hand above his heart and said, "Heaven forbid!"

* * *

   They moved out in five minutes. With the map to the area faxed over five minutes before, MacGyver drove Pete to the designated point. He had no idea how he had gotten into this, and he never knew how he ever got out of similar situations, but he knew that he would get out as soon as the mission was over.
   It felt good to once again be in action, though. He had spent several years adapting to the fact that he had a son, and he spent those years getting to know him. Now that Sam was out of college, MacGyver got to know his son even better than before.
   Sam had opted to stay behind at the hotel MacGyver had rented, rather than buddy up with Pete. He didn't know MacGyver's former employer very well, and he said he'd feel like a fifth wheel. MacGyver understood completely; if the situation was reverse, he'd feel the exact same way. In may ways, he and his son were exactly alike, and MacGyver had gotten to find out many of them. Being on this mission now, he couldn't help but think about his son and worry. Now that he had a family, he had to think of more than himself. He couldn't just drop everything and go off on another adventure; he had obligations now. But Sam was old enough to take care of himself, so MacGyver, as he drove to the deep woods, told Pete about everything he had done with his son, and they both traded tales; Pete had a daughter, and MacGyver was astounded to hear that much of Pete's stories were similar to his own. Wonders never ceased.
