CAIRO

Cairo is the capital of the Islamic world of today and the largest city in Africa. In Cairo, you will encounter the most ancient civilization of the world; the priceless treasures of the Pharaohs are to be admired in the Egyptian Museum of Antiques. Masterpieces of Islamic and Coptic history are also on view in their respective museums. Reminiscent of the past, are also the old quarters and the picturesque markets from which is wafted the perfume of the East, mysterious and attractive, the imposing Mosque and Superb Churches, though less ancient, mark another stage in civilization and art. Modern Cairo is very attractive by its big open squares, its admirable Corniche, now 28 miles along the Nile, modern buildings and luxurious hotels. It is a picturesque city, rich in scenes of great variety. EGYPTIAN MUSEUM Drive to the Museum for a visit of about 1.30 hours. The museum contains splendid burial furnishings of Tutankhamen and a superb collection of Egyptian antiquities one of the great museums of the world. MEMPHIS, SAKKARA AND PYRAMIDS OF GIZAH Proceed to Memphis to visit the statue of Ramses II and the Alabastar Sphinx, in the Necropolis (city of the Dead), visit Mastaba of Ti, the Serapeum and then to the Step Pyramid of King Zoser with its funerary Temple. From Sakkara drive to Mena House, which faces the Pyramids of Giza. Have lunch and then see the garden; ride a camel or sandeart to visit the three famous Pyramids KHEOPS, KEPHREN AND MIKERINOS. Also, the SPHINX and the Valley Temple. ISLAMIC MUSEUM-IBN TULUN MOSQUE TOMBS OF THE MAMELUKS - GAYER ANDERSON MUSEUM The Islamic Museum is in the same building that houses the National Public Library. The Museum contains the largest collection of Muslim artistic pieces in history. The rare exhibits represent various styles, Persian Turkish and Mameluki. 4 Mosque, second oldest in Cairo. It is exact copy of Samara Mosque in the north of Iraq. Visit next the beautiful Gayer Anderson Museum, adjacent to the Mosque, a jewel of Islamic Architecture. OLD CAIRO Dates back to 640 A.D. with churches and cathedrals built originally in the 7th century. Visit Al Maallaka or Hanging Church and Coptic Museum then the Mosque of AMR (the most ancient Mosque in Cairo) or the Synagogue and he Church of Abu Serga where the Holy Family spent much of their time during their stay in Egypt. CITADEL & MOSQUES AND BAZAARS Pass the old aquaduct then through picturesque quarters to reach Citadel, first built by Saladin. You will have a good view of Cairo and the Pyramids. See Mohamed Ah Mosque (Alabastar), Sultan Hassan Mosque and lbn Tulun Mosque. Return via Khan El KhaIiIi bazaars, dating from 14th century A.D. They offer excellent buys in silver, gold, copper and leather goods.
