'Right Here Waiting'

Justin knelt on the frozen ground, the bitter February wind whipping through his jacket, chilling him to the bone. He clutched the last present she had given him close to his chest as the tears he had cried so many times before started once again.

“My dearest Sarah, my Angel…” He sobbed into his shoulder. She was so close to him, but yet so far away. He’d lay in bed since she left a few days earlier, praying just to feel her touch one more time. It was driving him to the point of madness in the short period of time since she’d left. He was getting worse and worse every day. Everywhere he looked, he saw her beautiful, innocent face. Everywhere he went, he heard her pure, sweet voice.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oceans apart
Day after day,
And I slowly go insane.
I hear your voice on the line,
But it doesn’t stop the pain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He’d proposed to Sarah the month before she’d left. He never expected to be getting married at the age of 19, but it was so perfect with Sarah. They said they’d be together forever. They were joined by so many things…their love was untainted and wholesome. They were meant for each other. The look on her already glowing, radiant face when he proposed was enough to brighten his life. But he couldn’t see that face anymore.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I see you next to never
How can we say forever?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He held her hand the day she left. He never wanted to let go of that hand. She told him not to be scared; she told him to smile; she told him to find love again.

“Sarah, I will NEVER love again…” He started out loud. “I couldn’t possibly love anyone as much as I loved you. Well…but…Oh, Sarah…WHY?!? I know it’s not possible; I know you’ll never be back…but one day, I’ll see you again. And until then, I’ll live my life, trying to be happy, but always waiting for that day…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wherever you go,
Whatever you do,
I will be right here waiting for you.
Whatever it takes,
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She could always make him laugh. In her subtle ways, she brought him joy, no matter what she did. Just watching her sleep was enough to make Justin thank God she was with him.

…the way her golden hair used to shine in the Orlando sun.
…the way her intricate, green eyes would search his, always looking through him straight into his soul.
…the way her smile could light up an entire room and bring the simplest of all joy to whomever she ever met.
…the way she touched him ever so slightly just to let him know she was still there and loved just to be next to him.
…the way she fit so perfectly into his body when he held her so tightly.
…the way she would look at him after an argument and suddenly everything would be all right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I took for granted
All the times
That I thought would last somehow.
I hear the laughter; I taste the tears,
But I can’t get near you now.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“Why, Sarah?!?” He held the last gift she gave him before she left close to his bosom as he screamed into the unresponsive air. “Why did you leave me like this?!? I can’t take it…I can’t go on. Please give me a sign. Let me know everything’s going to be all right…please…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh can’t you see it, Baby,
You’ve got me going crazy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“I’m not the same without you. I know, I must go on, but it’s just not the same anymore. My career is over. I’ve got so many responsibilities; how can I live without you next to me? You were so sure our lives would be perfect, and I believed you. You said it would all work out.”

Justin got to his feet. “Well, you know what, Sarah? You lied! You LIED!! You left me all alone…you’re not next to me, like you said you’d always be.” His voice was angry, but the frustrated tears let loose even heavier than before. “I said I’d wait for you forever…but forever is so long, Sarah…it’s just so long…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wherever you go,
Whatever you do,
I will be right here waiting for you.
Whatever it takes,
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Brashly wiping his eyes, he knelt down once again, and buttoned the top button of his jacket. “I’m going to wait for you. I will. I’ll never love another woman. We have one more chance to be together. Until that day, my Angel, until that day…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wonder how it can survive –
This romance.
But in the end if I’m with you,
I’ll take the chance.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Justin stayed there for a good hour, the hot tears drawing rivers down his rosy cheeks. He said a prayer that he’d be able to make it through. He had to. He had no choice. He had to go on living. He had made Sarah a promise right before her usually warm hand had turned cold. He had to go on living. “Please dear Lord, give me the strength to keep it together…”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh can’t you see it, Baby
You’ve got me going crazy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The mourners had left. The minister was gone. Now it was just he and the workers ready to take his angel away for good. He had to say goodbye one last time.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wherever you go,
Whatever you do,
I will be right here waiting for you.
Whatever it takes,
Or how my heart breaks
I will be right here waiting for you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It finally grew too cold for the young boy. He touched the casket one more time. He clutched her gift even closer to his chest. She had given it to him right before she left. It had been the reason she had to leave. But he could never be angry with Sarah for that. This was only the beginning for him and the gift she gave to him. He had to do it alone, but somehow, he knew that he’d have Sarah there with him always, helping him along, smiling down on him every day.

He felt a genuine smile come over his lips as he said goodbye one last time before turning to go; her present stirred gently in his arms. He reached down and kissed it gently, tucking the warm blanket closer around baby Emily’s tiny face as he started back for his car.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Waiting for you.
