A native of the East Texas area, in Johnny's early years, the Horton family commuted between there and California. He returned to Shreveport, LA. in 1952 and joined the popular Louisiana Hayride.

Hank Williams returned to the Hayride in the fall of 1952 and died New Year's Day 1953. Seven months later, Horton married Williams' widow, Billie Jean Jones of Bossier City, LA.

Horton had worked hard in the country music field, but it was when he joined with legendary manager Tillman Franks of Shreveport, that his career went to the top.

His short career was brought to an end when Horton was killed in a car wreck on a railroad overpass at Milano, TX in early morning hours of Nov. 5, 1960.
