The First chapter deals with the Universities history and traditions. Consider this: they travel a distance three time zones apart, to jump and splash in the blood of lesser of the traditional conservative Midwest establishment or the flashy Gollywood liberals.
Notre Dame, from Catholic origins, owns the monopoly on the communication with god, with the priest as the middleman. This enabled the school to build an unprecedented number of nationwide fans. The Catholic interpretation of the bible teaches toughness is instilled in each and every child during gestation "by the man"...Knute Rockne. The Notre Dame players were inherently tougher; they wore their cleats inside out, flattened a learning curve without even opening a book, and their leatherheads needed not a sissy helmet.
To Notre Dame's credit, they usually have one of the toughest schedules in college football. Southern California is locked into a schedule since they belong to the Pacific Coast conference. The Irish belong to the Big East conference for many of their sport programs. They choose to remain as an Independant for their football program.
Notre Dame has had conflicts with some of their opponents. They suspended play during the forties with Army. A scuffle with the University of Michigan lead to a thirty year disruption of their meetings and they have played Ohio State only four times.
The Irish have to balance big money games with preservation of their win/loss record. Money isn't everything, there's credit cards, money orders and travelers checks too.
