Moby - Wolverhampton Wulfrun Hall 9/02/00

Moby is a musical genius. Not enough people know this. What even less people know about are his brilliant live shows. It's amazing how this small, thin, T-total, devote Christian, drug free, vegan, Michael Stipe look-a-like can pull of a show full of such power, beauty and at times aggression. He manages to mix together styles as diverse as dance, gospel, digital hardcore and even metal to great effect.

After ten years of touring on his own mainly as a DJ, Moby has finally got himself a band. And this allows him to do… well, whatever he likes really. He plays guitar, he play keyboard, he plays a drum machine, he plays bongos, he jumps around the stage like a kangaroo on a pogo stick and if there was a swimming pool in the Wulfrun Hall he' probably walk across it, no in fact he'd probably do a handstand across it. 'Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad' is beautiful, 'bodyrock', is funky and 'Go' is just mental.

Not only does Moby bare an uncanny resemblance to Michael Stipe but he also sounds like him and acts like. They also hae the same musical outlook. Both have managed to combine completely different styles of music with great success. Moby just need to reap the rewards of his hard work.

A lot of the great artists such as the Beatles and the Stones have accredited some of there greatest works to the influence of drugs. Moby can't use this excuse. His greatest work, 'Play', is pure musical genius. While the rest of the world's loosing its head, Moby's keeping his.
