Well, here it is. My page devoted to Great Big Sea, Canada's best Celtic group!

The Beginnings...

A long time ago, in the year 1991, Sean and Bob, originally with the successful group Rankin Street, met up with Darrell and Alan to form Great Big Sea. But the legend that is now Great Big Sea was offically formed at a kitchen party in Petty Harbour, NFLD.

Discography...

To date, Great Big Sea has released 4 CD's, one being made especially for the US market, with a compilation of songs from Play and Up . Their self-titled debut was released in 1992, Up in 1995, Play in 1997, and the US compilation album in 1998. All are excellent, and I highly recommend them!

The Music...

Great Big Sea's albums contain a good blend of traditional music, original songs written by the band members, and some excellent cover tunes. Their concerts are awesome, their raw energy is phenomenal, and are an overall excelent band! They also love their home in NFLD and wouldn't dream of giving it up. They try to add a little bit of their culture into every performance, and song, which clearly shows.

Why I Like Great Big Sea...

So, why do I absolutely love this group of Newfies?? Well, to make a long story extremely short, my parents are transplanted maritimers. (That means that they've moved to Western Canada from Eastern Canada, or the Maritimes.) Well, when they moved they brought along their culture and love of music, so I grew up listening to Anne Murray, Rita McNeil, and The Rankins. Well, while I was watching the Rita McNeil show way back in 1996, I came across this awesome group that had a guest appearance on the show. That group was Great Big Sea. (well, duh!) Anyways, I went out and bought Play and listened to it day and night. I discovered GBS's webpage in grade 10 computer class, and have been a huge fan ever since. Well, that's my story.
