In 1908 Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote Anne of Green Gables, the first book in the series of 8 books in total. There have been numerous film adaptations of Anne of Green Gables, but the Kevin Sullivan production done in 1985 is the absolute best, and my all time favorite movie! This page will focus mostly on the movie, with a brief little blurb on what the story line is for those who have never seen the movie before or read the book.

Anne of Green Gables follows the life of Anne Shirley, a 12 year old orphan. After spending most of her life in foster homes and orphanages, Anne is sent to Green Gables, Prince Edward Island, where Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert (sister and brother), have decided they would like to adopt a boy to help out on the farm. Oh, what a surprise when talkative and imaginative Anne shows up! At first the intentions of the Cuthbert's is to send Anne back to the orphange, but they soon grow attached to her and decided to keep her. Both the novel and the movie follow Anne as she grows up, becomes friends with Diana Barry, battles with Gilbert Blythe, triumphs in her goals and...you don't expect me to tell you everything, do you?! Nooo way, you've gotta read the book and find out the rest yourself. (no, I'm not being evil, I'm being lllaaazzzyyy, as it's 1am and I don't really wanna type anymore.)

And just a interesting piece of info I thought I'd throw in...in the film version young Anne Shirley was portrayed by Megan Follows, but Megan almost didn't get cast as Anne. Schuyler Grant (who plays Diana Barry in the movie), was originally chosen to play the part of Anne, but because of Anne of Green Gable's Canadian heritage, Kevin Sullivan thought that the role of Anne should be portrayed by a Canadian actress. He auditioned Megan Follows for the role, but wasn't satisfied with her audition, and launched a cross-Canada search for an actress. 3000 girls later, he still hadn't found anyone, and after much thought he decided his original assessment of Megan had been hasty, so he auditioned her again. And after her second audition she was offered the role of Anne Shirley. When I found this out it really got me to thinking just how different the whole movie would have been. Megan Follows portrayed the role of Anne Shirley perfectly...to have any other actress in this role would be extremely strange, and in my opinion, the film would have been horrible had not Megan played the role of Anne.

Ahh, but wait, there's more! The Sequel!! Approximately two years after the release of Anne of Green Gables, Sullivan Entertainment made Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel. Unlike the first Anne movie which was followed the novel almost perfectly, Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel was roughly based on three Anne novels, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of Windy Poplars, and Anne of the Island. But still, it was a good movie (although I think the first one was much better), but still, a overall good movie. (And Gilbert, a.k.a Jonathan Crombie *growls* what a cutie! *L*)

This time around, Anne is a 18 year old teacher in Avonlea, with a goal of becoming a successful writer. Gilbert Blythe, now in medical school, has fallen madly in love with Anne, and tries to convince her to marry her, but Anne refuses. Diana Barry gets married in this movie, and Anne realizes that her friendship with her will never be the same. When the opportunity rises for Anne to teach at Kingsport Ladies College in Nova Scotia, she takes the offer up with the advice of Marilla. She leaves for Kingsport without reconciling matters with Gilbert. Even though Anne is grown up, she still can't stay out of trouble, and get's in quite a few mishaps while at Kingsport. She becomes close friends with one of her students, Emmeline Harris, and has a little love fling with Emmeline's father, Captain Morgan Harris. After becoming homesick, Anne returns home to P.E.I to find...what? Ooo, its good, but I'm not telling! You've gotta watch the movie or read the book to find out!

And now, the cast! Here are the major characters in them movies. Some of these peoples have gone on to have semi-successful and some have since passed on since the making of the movies in '85 and '87. And just after this little blurb you'll find some pics of most of these peoples, so you can peek at what they look like.

Anne Shirley played by Megan Follows
Marilla Cuthbert played by Colleen Dewhurst
Matthew Cuthbert played by Richard Farnsworth
Rachel Lynde played by Patrician Hamilton
Miss Stacy played by Marilyn Lightstone
Diana Barry played by Schuyler Grant
Gilbert Blythe played by Jonathan Crombie

And now for s'more pictures!! Yea!!! These are just some leftovers that I couldn't fit in my little blurb above, and since I know you just wanna see these sooo bad, here they are! (And if you don't wanna see em you can just scrool on over and hit the home button at the bottom of the page)

Front Row (l-r): Anne just after arriving at Green Gables; Anne and Diana at the Christmas Ball; Anne telling Diana she's heading off to Kingsport; Anne and Gilbert (bout three minutes after this pic, Anne will discover that Gil has proposed to Christine *gasp* but don't worry, Anne and Gil do get together in the end); Anne telling Gil to shut up; Anne and Gil making up in the most romantic kiss I've ever seen *sigh*

Bottom Row (l-r): Matthew Cuthbert; Marilla Cuthbert; another pic of Gil! *sigh* isn't he just adorable?; Miss Stacey; Rachel Lynde (the biggest gossip in Avonlea); Anne and Gil when they frist met...wasn't Gil just soo nice? (then again, Anne does break a slate over his head shortly afterwards)
