Seeds for Ground Cover Plants

2120 Creeping Mahonia Mahonia repens
An excellent ground cover for zones 5-9. Creeping mahonia (sometimes also called
creeping hollygrape) is a low-growing, stoloniferous, evergreen shrub or
shrublet which typically grows to 1' tall and spreads by underground stems to
form an attractive ground cover. Features holly-like, odd-pinnate, compound
leaves with oval, spiny-toothed, leathery, bluish-green leaflets (usually 3-7).
Foliage turns purplish in winter. Deep yellow flowers appear in small racemes
(1-3") in spring and are followed by small clusters of grape-like, dark
bluish-purple berries (1/4" diameter) which mature in late summer. Berries are
very sour but edible and can be used in jellies. Yellow stem wood was used by
Native Americans to produce yellow dyes and a bitter tonic.
Although a very small plant, Oregon Grape is conspicuous for many reasons: it
often grows alone on warm, barren, rocky hillsides (although it is also at home
in moist forests); its holly-like, thick (but brittle) leaves are eye-catching;
it is usually evergreen (although the leaves commonly turn red in the fall, they
do remain on the plant), making it a wonderful ornamental plant as well.

H471 Roman Chamomile Anthemis nobilis Chamomile is a delightful herb to grow in the garden, it remains compact and spreads slowly to form a good ground cover in a sunny position (it is sometimes used as a lawn). It needs quite a bit of weeding until it is established, and occasional weeding even when established. Chamomile is a superb companion plant, enhancing the health of plants growing close to it. Many species of bulbs grow well through the chamomile. Grows only 3-12 inches tall and releases a delightful apple like odor when bruised or walked on. Will grow in sun or partial shade, but requires moist, well drained soil. A strongly aromatic perennial plant that has many medicinal uses. Package of 100 seeds. $1.95

HR175 Oregano Origanum vulgare Best suited for zones 4-8. A rhizomatous, sprawling plant which typically grows to 18" tall with a similar spread. Origanum vulgare is a very dense growing plant for sunny positions, it makes a good ground cover though it is slow to spread. An excellent flavouring for cooked foods and salads, it is also a very good companion plant and is said to repel insect pests. Package of 50 seeds $1.75

TPF133 Snow on the Mountain Euphorbia Marginata Zone 4-8. This hardy plant may also be used as a groundcover and will block out weeds with its vigorous growth. Tolerates a wide range of soil conditions from rich to poor, moist to dry, baking sun or light shade. May be used as a cut flower if the cut ends are seared immediately with flame. Milky sap can cause a rash, so avoid getting it on your skin or in your eyes. Snow-on-the-mountain is an annual herb with single, nearly smooth stems and milky juice. Grows 2-4 feet tall, with alternate, pale green leaves that are up to three inches long and oval to nearly round. Small, white and green flowers are clustered atop the plant. The floral leaves and bracts are extremely conspicuous; their broad white-to-pink margins contrast nicely with green inner surfaces. At maturity, tiny capsules containing three seeds each, are formed. Plants occur on a wide variety of soil types. Snow-on-the-mountain forms a latex that was used for chewing by the Kiowa. The plant is often cultivated for ornament, and some early cattlemen used the plant's juice for branding cattle in preference to a hot iron. However, contact with the juice causes dermatitis in some people. $5.00 Per Pack Seeds Per Pack: 125

TPF039 Creeping Thyme Thymus Serpyllum For Zones 5-8. This thyme is a creeping, woody based perennial which is primarily used as a ground cover. Numerous, thin, somewhat woody stems form a flat mat (2-3" tall) with tiny, rounded, glossy blue-green leaves (to 1/4"). Although leaves are aromatic, strength of scent varies according to season and habitat and leaves are usually not considered to be of culinary quality. Clusters of tiny, tubular, deep pink flowers appear in summer. Flowers are attractive to bees. Best as a small area ground cover or filler between stepping stones. Will sprawl over small rocks or over ledges in the rock garden $3.00 Per Pack Seeds Per Pack: 1,000

HR215 Sweet Woodruff Galium Oodratum Zone 6-8. Sold Out.. Sweet woodruff is a mat-forming perennial that is most often grown as a ground cover in shady areas. Plants typically grow 8-12" tall and feature fragrant, lance-shaped, dark green leaves in whorls of 6-8 along square stems. Small, fragrant, 4-petaled, white flowers appear in loose cymes in spring. Plants emit a strong odor of freshly mown hay when foliage is crushed or cut. Aromatic intensity of the foliage increases when dried, thus dried leaves are popularly used in sachets or potpourris. Plants have also been used commercially in perfumes. Leaves are sometimes used to flavor teas and cold fruit drinks. Leaves are also used to make May wine, a punch made from white wine flavored with woodruff, orange and pineapple. Woodruff comes from Old English meaning wood that unravels, in probable reference to the creeping rootstock of the plant. Formerly known as Asperula odorata. Package of 35 seeds $4.00

CAPE "Super Smoke Plus" SEED PRIMER

For treating seeds of many types of trees, cacti, palms, grasses, strelitzias, and many, many other varieties.

Cape Super Smoke Plus is an absorbent paper that is impregnated with fynbos-smoke-saturated water. The paper is then dried and sealed in a polythene packet. When dormant seeds require "smoking", a predetermined volume of water is added to the paper in a suitable container and the seeds are "smoke-primed" by soaking in the smoke-water solution for 24 hours. In order to have the maximum effect in breaking seed dormancy, a range of natural germination stimulators has been added to the smoke solution to overcome other forms of seed dormancy found in many species.

Each standard packet contains five papers, and 50ml water should be added to each paper. Each packet is thus sufficient to make up 250ml solution ( approx. 8½ oz. ) and enough to treat approximately 500 large seeds.

Package of 5 papers $12.00
