Sowing instructions
For Home Gardeners
Start seeds inside in trays of
sterlized potting soil. We recommend soaking seeds in CAPE seed primer solution
for 24 hours prior to planting. Provide warm soil temperature and 10 hours of
bright each day for germination in 3-4 weeks. Transplant into larger containers
or outdoors in tropical climates when seedlings attain 4-6 leaves. If you
live in northern states and wish to tub grow these plants, always repot plants
when they become root bound, stepping up one size in size of container each
time.
For the Nursery Trade
Since seeds of most of the citrus
species are polyembroynic the nucellar seedlings obtained through seeds
propagation carry the true character of the plants. Nursery technique: Sow
seeds in spring in primary nursery beds properly prepared with organic
manure. The beds should be well drained free from soil borne pathogens and
nematodes. It is desirable that the upper portion of primary nursery beds are
covered with sand about a 3-5 cm layer., and seeds are treated with fungicide to
avoid seed borne infections.Usually 3-4 weeks time is required for
germination. When the seedlings attain 4-6 leaf stage they are ready for
transplanting in secondary nursery beds.In the secondary nursery proper spacing
of about 20-30 cm is maintained between plants and rows.
Plant out: Usually citrus is planted in pits of 50x50x50 or of 75x75x75 cm
in square with a spacing of 5x5m in case of citrus aurantifolia and 5-8 m
depending on the species at hand..The planting is done usually in the monsoon
season but weather should not be too wet or too dry at time of
planting.Supplementry irrigation in the early ears of planting is
essential.Planting at time of heavy rains should be avoided to prevent any water
logging near the planting pits.
CAPE "Super Smoke Plus" SEED PRIMER
For treating seeds of many types of trees, cacti, palms, grasses,
strelitzias, and many, many other varieties.
Cape Super Smoke Plus is an absorbent paper that is impregnated with
fynbos-smoke-saturated water. The paper is then dried and sealed in a polythene
packet. When dormant seeds require "smoking", a predetermined volume of water is
added to the paper in a suitable container and the seeds are "smoke-primed" by
soaking in the smoke-water solution for 24 hours. In order to have the maximum
effect in breaking seed dormancy, a range of natural germination stimulators has
been added to the smoke solution to overcome other forms of seed dormancy found
in many species.
Each standard packet contains five papers, and 50ml water should be added to
each paper. Each packet is thus sufficient to make up 250ml solution ( approx.
8½ oz. ) and enough to treat approximately 500 large seeds.
