Indigenous victim of Baghaihat attack

On 19-20 February 2010, Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous people at Baghaichari leaving an indigenous man dead. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. The indigenous Buddhist man gunned down by the Bangladesh army.


Bengali Muslim settlers staged demonstration in Rangamati to demand ‘equal rights’

On 10 July 2005 the Muslim settlers under the banner of CHT Equal Rights Movement (ERM) and Bengali Student Coucnil (BSC) organised ‘human chain’ in front of office of Deputy Commissioner demanding equal rights for Muslim settlers in the UNDP-funded project. It is mentionable that Mr. Jorgen Lissner, UNDP Country Representative and UN Coordinator was visiting Rangamati on that day. The leaders of the ERM and BSC met Mr. Jorgen Lissner at the DC office. They demanded:

  1. Ensure parity for Bengalis;
  2. Stop discrimination against Bengalis;
  3. Ensure equal participation;
  4. Ensure transparency;
  5. No communal patronisation;
  6. Enroll Bengalis in CHTDF;
  7. Include Bengalis in policy making;
  8. Ensure accountability;
  9. Do justice for all caste and creed;
  10. Select poor village for development;
  11. Select Bengali NGOs as development partner and
  12. Stop patronisation of HTNF.
