Bangladesh army brutally torture a returnee indigenous refugee in Matiranga of Khagrachari district

On 27 January 2005 around 3:00 am the house of the Mr. Shashanka Dhamai s/o late Jatindra Dhamai of Bailyachari School Para village under Matiranga sub-district of Khagrachari district was raided by a group of Bangladesh army led by Major Babar from the Matiranga zone under Guimara Brigade in Khagrachari district. Mr. Shashanka Dhamai is a returnee indigenous refugee who came back from Indian state of Tripura in 1997 in accordance 20 points packages agreement signed between Government of Bangladesh and leaders of the indigenous refugees. He was brutally beaten by the army.

It was learnt that at first the Bangladesh army awoke him at 3:00 am on that day while he was sleeping at his home. Then the army brought him out beside the road (near the small bamboo garden) and wanted to know about Jirendra Tripura. While he replied negative then the army started to brutally beat him. The army told him that Jirendra Tripura was a leader of underground terrorist group and he has been committing crime through out Bailyachari area for long time.

The Bangladesh army also intentionally accused Shashanka Tripura to have involvement with the terrorist activities. The army wanted to know how he had been bearing expenditure of his sons for education who were studying in Dhaka and Chittagong. The army mentioned that as he was a peasant he could not bear this huge amount of expenditure. The army fictitiously accused him that it was possible for him as he involved with terrorist activity and extortion of money with the help of underground terrorist group mentioned above. At last he was released but the army ordered him to submit yearly income along with source and budget for the family and to attend everyday to the army camp. It is mentionable that his son Mr. Binota Moy Dhamai is the General Secretary of the Hill Students Council (PCP) and closely involved with the PCJSS.

It is also notable that Mr. Shashanka Tripura was caught by the army of same army zone on 11 August 2004 and kidnapped by UPDF armed cadres two times in last year. Now Mr. Shashanka Tripur and his family are living in fear of further atrocity.
