Mahalchari Buddha

On 26 August 2003, Bangladesh army in league with Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people in Mahalchari. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers set fire on more than 370 indigenous Buddhist houses. An indigenous Chakma man and an indigenous Chakma infant (8 months) were killed. More than 1000 indigenous Buddhist people were rendered homeless. Lemucharipara Buddhist Temple and Babupara Buddhist Temple were burnt down. Lord Buddha's images were demolished. Bangladesh army and Muslim settlers raped 10 indigenous Chakma women.


Bengali settlers attack indigenous people in Mahalchari in reprisal of abduction of a settler by gunmen

On 24 August 2003, a group of gunmen kidnapped a Bengali businessman Mr. Rupan Mahajan from Sindukchari of Mahalchari. The kidnappers demanded Taka 5 hundred thousand as ransom for his release. On 26 August, the relatives of Mr. Mahajan came to Babupara to meet some relatives of the gunmen to discuss his release. They demanded unconditional release of Mr. Mahajan. But the kidnappers refused and stuck to their demand. As a result, violence broke out between the relatives of the abductors and the abductee. An indigenous Chakma man Mr. Binodh Bihari Khisa died in the violence. Then and there hundreds of Muslim Settlers backed by police and military joined the violence and set fire on more than 370 indigenous Chakma houses in Babupara, Lemuchari, and Thalipara areas under Mahalchari. Another indigenous Chikku Chakma (8 month) s/o Samiran Chakma was killed and more than 50 indigenous people were injured in the violence. More than 1,000 indigenous people were rendered homeless. Lemuchari Para Buddhist temple and Babupara Buddhist Temple were burnt down. Lord Buddha's images were demolished and taken away. The Bangladeshi army and the Muslim Settlers raped following indigenous Chakma women:
