Army backed UPDF abducts 3 foreign hostages in Rangamati

On 16 February 2001, Bangladesh army backed UPDF abducted 1 British and 2 Danish from Guniapara in Rangamati district. The hostages are identified as Tim Selby from United Kingdom, Torben Mikkelsen and Nils Hulgaard from Denmark.

The group were driving between villages in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Another Briton, David Weston, and the group's Bangladeshi driver were also abducted but later released unharmed. UPDF have demanded a 1.2m ransom.

The Europeans had been hired by Danish company Kampsax to work on a road development project in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

It's believed Bangladesh army intelligence DGFI instructed UPDF to abduct the foreign workers with the aim to restrict CHT for foreigners on security ground.
