Bengali settlers attack 4 indigenous Buddhist youths in RangamatiOn 3 April 1999, 4 indigenous Chakma youths were travelling by a passenger ferry from Barkal to Rangamati town. The Muslim fare collector of the ferry demanded unreasonably high fare from them although he took normal fare from the Muslim settlers. The indigenous Buddhist youths offered the fare collector normal fare and politely asked him why they were being discriminated against. The Muslim fare collector refused to accept normal fare from them. He abused them with obscene language and vowed to take full revenge against them at Rangamati. As soon as the ferry arrived at the pier of Rangamati the fare collector incited the Muslim settlers at the pier to catch and beat 4 indigenous Buddhist youths. He falsely complained that those 4 indigenous Buddhist youths had robbed him of his purse. The Muslim settlers caught the 4 indigenous Buddhist youths and mercilessly beat them up till they were seriously injured. They were profusely bleeding in the presence of the Bangladesh army. Bangladesh army neither rescued the indigenous youths nor prevented the Muslim settlers from attacking them. Thereafter, the Muslim settlers collected 4 big knives from the nearby market and handed over 4 indigenous Buddhist youths to the Police under the fabricated charge that the indigenous youths had robbed the fare collector at knife point. The Police arrested and sent 4 indigenous youths to Rangamati Prison without making any enquiry into the false and concocted allegation. However the prison authorities hospitalised 4 indigenous Buddhist youths as they were seriously injured.
