On 19-20 February 2010; Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people at Baghaichari. The settlers destroyed many indigenous houses and Buddhist temples. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. Bangladesh police fight indigenous people whose land was grabbed by Muslim settlers.

Bangladesh army arrest an indigenous man in Barkal

On 5 April 2020 at around 11.00 am, a group of Bangladesh army men from Subalong Army Camp arrested an indigenous villager named Shanti Jiban Chakma alias Ajit/Kalaiya (45), son of Chittoma Chakma in Barkal, Rangamati district.

Mr. Shanti Jiban Chakma is a resident of Shilchari village of Subalong. He is a farmer and a timber businessman.

Shanti Jiban Chakma usually resides at Barkal town with his family. On 5 March he went to his village house of Shilchari to see his own paddy field. Just from that place, a patrolling group of Bangladesh army from Subalong army camp led by Subedar Farooq and Subedar Alamgir detained Shanti Jiban Chakma.

Till writing the report, army has not released detained Shanti Jiban Chakma and has reportedly detained him at Subalong army camp. He is not currently involved in any political activities. Victim’s family sources said there was no case against him in the police station.
