On 29-30 September 2012 Muslim extremists attacked the Buddhist community in Ramu; Ukhia; Teknaf and Cox’s Bazaar municipality area under Cox’s Bazaar district and Patia in Chittagong district. It was in retaliation of a Facebook posting defaming the Quran allegedly by a Facebook user Uttam Barua. In this attack at least a dozen Buddhist temples were destroyed and around 200-250 Buddhist homes were ransacked and robbed. Besides 2 Hindu temples were vandalised in Patia.

Bangladesh army ransack indigenous Buddhist house in Naniachar

On 13 May 2016, a group of 40 to 50 Bangladesh army personnel from Islampur camp searched and ransacked an indigenous Buddhist house at Hugurmara village in Naniachar, Rangamati district.

Bangladesh army was accompanied by Mohammad Salam, a member of Burighat Union Council. The soldiers broke into the house of Dhana Bikash Chakma and then searched every corner of it, turning it upside down. However they found nothing incriminating. Bangladesh army took away 11 cooking utensils, Taka 100 and some documents including his son Gyana Bikash Chakma’s national ID card and the entry card for SSC exam.

In another incident, Union Council member Mohammad Salam took the army to Hugurmara village and snatched away a mobile handset from Anu Bikash Chakma (35). Salam was dressed in military uniform during the raid.
