Bengali settlers attempt to grab indigenous Buddhist land in Manikchari

On 1 July 2015, Muslim settlers attempted to grab 10 acres of indigenous land belonging to 2 indigenous Buddhist villagers in Manikcahri, Khagrachari district.

Ratan Chakma (60) son of late Surojoy Chakma and his brother Pattan Chakma (54) have been in the possession of the said land for over 40 years.

On 29 June 2015, Muslim settlers Mohammad Hasan (32) and his brother Mohammad Kashem (30) son of Mohammad Julu Sarkar from Gochchabil went to the land to clear jungle. They cliam the land to be their own and planted mango sapling on it.

The indigenous Buddhist people protested but the Muslim settlers paid little heed to it. When Satyoban Chakma, the share cropper went to work there on 1 July 2015 (Wednesday) morning the settlers chased him away.

The indigenous land owners fear that they might be evicted from their ancestral land.
