On 29-30 September 2012 Muslim extremists attacked the Buddhist community in Ramu; Ukhia; Teknaf and Cox’s Bazaar municipality area under Cox’s Bazaar district and Patia in Chittagong district. It was in retaliation of a Facebook posting defaming the Quran allegedly by a Facebook user Uttam Barua. In this attack at least a dozen Buddhist temples were destroyed and around 200-250 Buddhist homes were ransacked and robbed. Besides 2 Hindu temples were vandalised in Patia.

Bangladesh army open fire at indigenous Buddhist villages in Mahalchari

On 6 June 2015, Bangladesh army entered an indigenous Buddhist village in Mahalchari and indiscriminately opened fire gunshots creating panic among the residents.

Bangladesh army from Sindukchari Military Zone in Mahalchari went to Kolachari village in 2 military vehicles. They first opened fire 4 to 5 rounds of gunshots near the house of Rangamo Chakma (60) and then in front of a tea shop at a place called Amtola.

The shooting comes more than a week after the Bangladesh army searched 3 indigenous houses including that of Rangamo Chakma in the area.
