Chanchala Chakma victim of Bangladesh Police firing
On 30 June 2013 Bangladesh police opened fire on indigenous Buddhist people in south Khabongpujya area of Khagrachari district. An indigenous Buddhist woman identified as Chanchala Chakma (50) was seriously injured by the rubber bullets.

Bangladesh police open fire on indigenous people in Khagrachari

On 20 May 2015, Bangladesh Detective Branch police opened fire on a crowd of indigenous people at Akbari village in Khagrachari. Indigenous people were resisting arrest of an innocent indigenous man by police.

An indigenous youth signaled a Khagrachari-bound public transport vehicle to take him. The public vehicle which was coming from Mahalchari pulled over. But instead of taking him, some Detectiv Branch police disguised as traders got off the vehicle. The police tried to arrest him believing him to be an extortionist.

But local indigenous people came to rescue the youth leading to a heightened tension between them and the police in plain clothe. At one stage the DB police who had until then concealed their indentity took their guns out and opened fire on the indigenous people. The gunfire injured Bimal Joy Tripura in the leg.

Later on, a group of Bangladesh army personnel rushed to the spot and arrested Bimal Joy Tripura and 4 others. The arrested victims are:

  1. Chomurung Tripura (32) son of Biro Kumar Tripura from Akbari village
  2. Bijoy Chakma (31) son of Poshu Ranjan Chakma
  3. Dulal Tripura alias Bantarai (37) son of Rai Tripura from Champaghat area
  4. Sunayan Tripura alias Chailapru (40) son of Purno Ray Tripura from Bangalkati village

Bangladesh army also briefly detained Nobin Kumar Chakma a shopkeeper at Champaghat before setting him free.
