Secretary of Special Affairs discuss CHT "development" with GOC and Commissioner

On 4 Jan 1995, Mr. Fazlul Hasan Yusuf the Secretary of the Special Affairs Division under Prime Minister's Secretariat discussed various development projects in the CHT with Maj. Gen. Azizur Rahman in Chittagong. Maj. Gen. Azizur Rahman is Chairman of CHT Development Board and General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 24th Infantry Division of the Bangladesh Army.

The discussion between Mr. Yusuf and GOC of the 24th infantry division on CHT "development" confirms that CHT is still under military rule despite restoration of democratic government in Bangladesh. It confirms that indigenous people have no say in the development of the CHT.

Mr. Yusuf had also discussed the law and order situation particularly the problems of Muslim settlers and the indigenous people with Mr. Safiqul Islam the Commissioner of Chittagong Division. It appears that they have not contemplated to meet the demand of the JSS for the removal of the Muslim settlers from the CHT.

Mr. Yusuf paid a visit to the Ethnological Museum in Chittagong and expressed hopes that the Museum would be able to focus the attention of foreign visitors on the significant "development" made in the CHT under the Bangladeshi Rule!
