Bangladesh army terrorizes indigenous Chakma Buddhists in Naniachar

On 20-21 June 1989, Bangladesh army personnel forcibly brought the indigenous Buddhist inhabitants of Boradam of Naniachar to the army camp at Naniachar, Rangamati district.

Bangladesh army detained the indigenous Buddhist people for 5 days. Bangladesh army compelled the indigenous people to cast their votes on 25 June 1989 in the Hill District Council elections.

Bangladesh army warned the indigenous people in advance that local and foreign journalists would visit the polling centre at Naniachar. So indigenous people must say that they had come to cast their votes whole heartedly and on their own. They must not tell the visitors that they were forcibly brought from their homes at the army camp and were being held at the camp.

But when Miss Nirabala Chakma told one foreign journalist that they were forcibly brought from their homes 5 days before the election and being held up at the army camp for casting votes in the elections, she was subjected to physical tortures and rape by the army personnel for the whole night on 25 June 1989.
