On 19-20 February 2010; Bangladesh army backed Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous people at Baghaichari leaving an indigenous man dead. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. The indigenous Buddhist man gunned down by the Bangladesh army.

Bengali settlers hack to dead an indigenous person in Khagrachari

On 28 April 1988 at 10:50 hours, a group of Muslim settlers attacked an indigenous Buddhist village Harina Para in Khagrachari. The village is situated about 150 meters south east of the BDR camp at Khagrachari.

Muslim settlers burnt down 14 houses to ashes. One indigenous person was hacked to death on the spot and 2 others were seriously wounded with injuries on the heads.

Col. Syed Ibrahim, Brigade Commander of 203rd Infantry Brigade visited the affected village. When the affected indigenous inhabitants complained to the visiting army commander that the incident would not have occured had the army and BDR authorities not remained mute spectators. In reply Col. Ibrahim shouted- "It is more than enough that you are still alive."

When reports of serioully injured victims were produced before him, the angry Brigade Commander shouted- "I don't believe, you are making a mountain out of a mole hill."

The dead and injured victims are:

  1. Mr. Arabindu Chakma, son of Late Chikanya Chakma of Harina Para, Khagrachari. He was hacked to death by the Muslim settlers on the spot.
  2. Miss Ittugi Chakma, daughter of Mr. Taranga Mohan Chakma, address as above. She was seriously injured when she was attacked by the Muslim settlers with sticks and sharp weapons. As a result she suffered an injury on the head.
  3. Mr. Taranga Mohan Chakma, address as above. Muslim settlers attacked him as above.

Affected persons of Harina Para with losses:

  1. Mr. Jamani Mohan Chakma (50), son of Mr. Bairappya Chakma, of Harina Para, Khagrachari. His house was totally burnt to ashes. Total losses Tk. 70,000.
  2. Mr. Binay Bikash Chakma (35), address as above. His house was destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 50,000.
  3. Mr. Ibilichya Chakma (40), son of Mr. Tarani Sen Chakma, address as above. His house was destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 80,000.
  4. Mr. Kumud Baran Chakma (35), son of Mr. Sirish Chandra Chakma, address as above. His house was destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 40,000.
  5. Mr. Amal Prakash Chakma (45), son of Mr. Hara Kishore Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 30,000.
  6. Mr. Ganga Ram Chakma (40), son of Mr. Satya Dhan Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 85,000.
  7. Mr. Ranjit Chakma (40), son of Mr. Birendra Kumar Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 40,000.
  8. Mr. Bhupendra Lal Chakma (42), son of Mr. Bipin Mohan Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 11,000.
  9. Mr. Niramay Chakma (40), son of Mr. Ganga Ram Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 15,000.
  10. Mr. Braja Mohan Chakma (62), son of Mr. Basanta Kumar Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 60,000.
  11. Mr. Surya Kumar Chakma (45), son of Late Kritartha Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 60,000.
  12. Mr. Binay Bhusan Chakma (35), son of Mr. Birendra Lal Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 95,000
  13. Mr. Taranga Mohan Chakma (55), address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 8,000.
  14. Mr. Birendra Kumar Chakma (65), son of Mr. Burappya Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 50,000.
  15. Mr. Bindu Bikash Chakma (35), son of Mr. Birendra Kumar Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. His valuables were robbed. Total losses Tk. 40,000.
  16. Mr. Nir Madan Chakma (28), son of Mr. Birendra Kumar Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk, 35,000.
  17. Mr. Dhamma Ratan Chakma (55), address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 30,000.
  18. Mr. Bimal Kanti Chakma (35), son of Mr. Braja Mohan Chakma, address as above. His house destroyed as above. Total losses Tk. 45,000.
