On 17 February 2011; Border Guards of Bangladesh and Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people at Longadu leaving at least 2 indigenous people seriously injured. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land. A Chakma couple pick up the pieces after the house was burnt down by the settlers.

Bangladesh army torture indigenous people in Longadu

On 09 Feb. 1988, 25 Bangladesh army personnel of 14th East Bengal Regiment from the army camp at Karalya Chari along with 12 Muslim settlers led by Lt. Harun raided indigenous Buddhist village Baisnab Headman Para of Bamer Atarak Chara in Longadu, Rangamati district.

The raid was conducted on the pretext of cow lifting and meeting held by the Shanti Bahini in the village. A number of indigenous people were victimised during the the raid and taken to the army camp where they were subjected to inhuman physical torture.

The innocent victims were released on the condition that they would report to the army camp and furnish daily reports about the Shanti Bahini activity. The victims are:

  1. Mr. Binimoy Chakma (26), son of Mr. Harish Chandra Chakma, of Baishnab Headman Para, Bamer Atarak Chara, Longadu. The victim was subjected to inhuman physical torture with hands, legs tied then water poured through the nostrils.
  2. Mr. Lalit Baran Chakma (25), son of Mr. Sukkaram Chakma, address as above. Beaten as above.
  3. Mr. Nikhil Priya Chakma, address as above. Beaten as above.
  4. Mr. Abani Chakma (42), son of Mr. Rizav Chandra Chakma, address as above. Beaten as above.
  5. Mr. Tigirikya Chakma (44), son of late Viza Chakma, address as above. Beaten as above.
  6. Mr. Kali Ratan Chakma (43), son of late Jay Sen Chakma, address as above. Beaten as above.

Following defence personnel and Muslim settlers took part in the raid against the indigenous people.

  1. Havildar Shafiqul Is1am (Regimental Police).
  2. Mohammad Siraj Mia (Muslim settler), Chairman, Atarak Chara Union Council.
