On 17 February 2011; Border Guards of Bangladesh and Muslim settlers attacked the indigenous Buddhist people at Longadu leaving at least 2 indigenous people seriously injured. The aim of the attack was to drive out the indigenous Chakma Buddhists and grab their land.

Bengali settlers attack indigenous people in Longadu

On 23 Feb. 1987, Muslim settlers and VDP (Village Defence Police) attacked indigenous Chakma Buddhists of Shila Kata in Longadu, Rangamati district.

Muslim settlers and VDP who were more than 200 in number advanced towards the indigenous Buddhist village shouting Islamic communal slogans and with firearms and deadly weapons. Hearing the slogans and sensing danger ahead, the indigenous Buddhist inhabitants ran for their lives leaving behind their homes and properties.

Muslim settlers and VDP carried out robbery and arson of indigenous Buddhist houses in the village. The aim of the attack was to uproot the original Buddhist inhabitants from their ancestral home.

The matter was reported to the Deputy Commissioner of Rangamati and the Commander of 305th Brigade, Bangladesh army in Rangamati. But no action was taken. The victims are:

  1. Mr. Jnanendra Chakma, son of Mr. Putul Chandra Chakma of Shila Kata, Longadu. Muslim settlers robbed and destroyed property worth Taka 11,450.
  2. Mr. Rajani Kumar Chakma, son of Mr. Dheba Chandra Chakma of Shila Kata, Longadu. Muslim settlers robbed and destroyed property worth Taka 3000 (Three thousand taka).
  3. Mr. Bijoy Kumar Chakma, son of Mr. Bipin Chandra Chakma, address as above. Muslim settlers robbed and destroyed property worth Taka 29,100 (Twenty nine thousand and one hundred taka).
  4. Mr. Sumoti Ranjan Chakma, son of Mr. Bipin Chandra Chakma, address as above. Muslim settlers robbed and destroyed property worth Taka 10,900 (Ten thousand and nine hundred taka).
