Bangladesh army rape, murder and torture indigenous Buddhists in Panchari

On 19 January 1987 at 16:00 hours, Bangladesh army personnel (numbering 190) of 19 EBR from the army camps at Nalkaba and Bhaibon Chara led by Major Kader carried out a military operation against landless indigenous Buddhist people who have been rehabilitated in No. 2 Rehabilitation Area under Panchari, Khagrachari district. During the operation many indigenous men and women were subjected to inhuman beating, tortures and rape.

Bangladesh government with the help and financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), under the guise of Hill Tracts Development Programme had nominally rehabilitated the landless slash and burn indigenous farmers in this area only to deceive the international community. In the name of rehabilitation of the landless indigenous people and the Development Programme for CHT, Bangladesh government has received financial assistance and loan from ADB the lion share of which has been spent for the illegal settlement of Muslim settlers in the CHT.
