In the autumn of 1999 a dream was born. Back then however, it wasnt a dream as much as it was just a way to pass the time. Now, only 2 and a half years later, that dream is quickly becoming a reality. Philadelphia Backyard Wrestling (PBW) has gained somewhat of a cult following, as well as recognition from all over the nation. Before looking into the future, though, we must first look at the past. Originally calling themselves Backyard Championship Wrestling (BCW), this group of grade school students were nothing but a joke. The gimmicks were total rip-offs of bigger federations, story lines didnt even exsist, and much of the roster consisted of people who didnt even watch wrestling, let alone have the skills needed to perform physically. As time went on, personalties were developed and they realized that writing creative storylines might actually make their product more entertaining. Many changes began to occur at this time, including changing the name to the less-generic Philadelphia Backyard Wrestling (PBW), making the move from one of the wrestlers front yard to a place more fitting for having a wrestling show, and an overall increase in taking things seriously. During the summer of 2000 many of the people still with PBW just didnt fit in anymore, and could not adjust to the growth. As PBW grew closer to the one year anniversary, it was obvious that those who could not adjust and learn to be more professional had to be released. This, however, launched PBW into a very turbulant time. The roster was at an all time low, and getting enough people to have a show was seeming almost impossible. Despite all of this everyone continued on, just to keep hope alive. By the time the new year came, PBW had to take a break until they could find enough talent to start up full time again. Although times seemed grim, it only took three months before they made their comeback once again. With the sudden rebirth, the storylines were at an all time high and PBW started getting some serious attention. This growth continued all throughtout the summer, and by the time fall came back around things were about to blow up. The roster had grown to proportions previously unimagined. The PBW name was really beginning to spread. The website was getting more hits then ever, there were quite a few fans attending shows, and major companies began requesting footage for videotapes to be distributed nation-wide. The spur of interest may be attributed to the lack of quality coming from the big feds (WWF), but it must also be coming from the over 2 years of hard work. PBW has continued doing things the way they should be done, and it seems to be paying off. Now, in 2002, PBW has gained serious recognition from independent wrestling federations, and it looks like the time to yet again bring things to the next level may be upon us. That dream is becoming a reality. |
