Linda Clifford

Linda Clifford is a Brooklyn girl whose unique, confident voice and attitude in her songs put feminism to a disco beat. From 1977 through 1980, she recorded six albums for Curtis Mayfield's Curtom label. Many of those albums featured either writing, production, or singing help from Mr. "Superfly" Mayfield himself. But make no mistake--when Linda sang, she was running the show.

In the 60s, Linda sang with the Jerico Jazz Singers and with her own jazz trio. She was actually Miss New York State in 1966 and ten years later (after a stint on Paramount records), her string of disco hits began with tunes like "From Now On," "Repossessed," "Red Light" from Fame, and her cover of the Broadway classic "If My Friends Could See Me Now" (which, I hear, was a Studio 54 favorite).

Now, as you can see, Linda is so beautiful and super talented. But there is really only one main reason why I wanted to tell you about her: her brilliant 7-minute torch song from hell, "Runaway Love."

"Runaway Love" is a song of revenge-- no, liberation from Linda's (or any woman's) doggish boyfriend (and his dog too!). Set against one of the funkier melodies produced for a disco-era chanteuse, it's like a Millie Jackson romp without the curse words. Linda's super sassy delivery during the song's spoken rap would make a Jerry Springer guest jealous. And while she's serious as a heart-attack, the song never takes itself too seriously, making it fun enough for any dancefloor or party. Girls, this is the perfect tune to put on when your man is "runnin' away" too much, if ya know what I mean. Plus it features the Jones Girls on backup vocals!
