A tip-toeing shadow in the moon-drenched land,
A strong, proud figure in the night.
The essence of the wild, a collector of awe,
The silhouette alone of grace and might.
Loping through the wilderness with gentleness and ease,
Carrying a certain peace as he goes,
Over rocky cliffs, canyons deep and all land in between,
From the mirror lake to where the river flows.
And in his piercing gaze lie a thousand untold tales,
Of a wretched past and future all too bleak...
But even if they heard... nobody would really listen...
That's the only reason why he doesn't speak.
He carries on, his eyes aglow, his pelt thick and shining,
Pauses briefly : by last night's kill, and feeds...
The heads on to his family, the shelter of his home,
He knows a loving mate and pack is all he needs.

Wolves, over the centuries they have shared this planet with us, have somehow developed a rather... bad reputation. On that really doesn't fit them at all. Yet, lately, they've been getting back something more along the lines of what they deserve. People, slowly, are learning that there is something beautiful, wonderful and even mystical about this amazing animal. Wolves are special... they are incredible... what IS it with wolves that people are starting to adore? Well... basically... there is a wolf to fit ANYONE. There's the typical wolf, the natural wolf, the symbol of the wilderness and everything wild. There's the pack wolf, the family animal, the one with pups and friends and connections. There's the fierce wolf, the strong, quick-witted and awe-inspiring fighter. There's the cuddly innocent baby wolves themselves. There's the spiritual wolf, the one that goes way back into American Indian mythology. I'm glad that the savage-human-killing wolf is beginning to disappear from the wolf-spectrum. Because that never was, and never will be, the truth. Now I'm not going to say, however, that wolves don't kill. I mean, they have to eat. And I'm not going to say they don't kill LIVESTOCK, because they do. But if they had more habitat... if they had even HALF the territory space they used to... they wouldn't have to. If we're going to move in, clear forests, kick out the wolves and virtually all of their natural prey... how can we hold it against them if they kill some cows? There's got to be a compromise... persecution won't solve the problem.

For a bit on the wolf as a spiritual beast, here's the way to go!

the three wolf pics on this page are my gorgeous adopted wolfies :) Their names are Motzie (top), Hero (the younger one, running) and Grace (the little happy smiling one right here)
they are adopted from the Dark Forest
And all the backgrounds on my wolf pages are from Spiritwolf's Collection. Thanks!
