~ My Mother's Finest Recipes ~

When she was a young bride in the early 1940's, my Mother wrote her "Finest Recipes" in this small brown spiral notebook. Most are Pennsylvania Dutch recipes from her family. This is the only "cookbook" I remember seeing her use when I was a little girl. She rarely followed a written recipe unless she was trying a new one she found in a newspaper or magazine, or a new recipe from a neighbor or from one of her sisters. All the cake and pie recipes, even all the Christmas cookie recipes, she just "knew". Many of the recipes on Mom's recipe page are from this notebook.

The song you hear is "Que Sera Sera", a song from the fifties by Doris Day.
It was one of my mother's favorite songs... one she liked to sing.
    Here are the lyrics -

When I was just a little girl, I asked my mother what will I be?
Would I be pretty, would I be rich?
Here's what she said to me:

Que sera sera, What ever will be, will be -
The future's not ours to see, Que sera sera
    What will be will be.

When I grew up and fell in love, I asked my sweetheart, what lies ahead?
Will we have rainbows day after day?
    Here's what my sweetheart said:

Que sera sera, What ever will be, will be,
The future's not ours to see, Que sera sera,
    What will be will be.

Now I have children of my own, they ask their mother, what will I be?
Would I be handsome, would I be rich?
    I tell them tenderly:

Que sera sera, What ever will be, will be,
The future's not ours to see,
Que sera sera, What will be, will be.

Eventually Mom got a recipe box - this metal card file. In it were some recipes cut from magazines, some recipes from friends and ...
  • Recipes from "Aunt Elsie", her oldest sister. Aunt Elsie's recipes are included on Mom's recipe page.

  • Recipes from my sister, Carol.
Carol is MOM to Brent, Beth, Brooke & Brad & she's also a first grade teacher.
