People with manic-depression (also called bipolar disorder ) have manic episodes in addition to clinical depression . The chief symptom of a manic episode is an unusually elevated or expansive mood, not just feeling happy. In the early stages one may appear to be more social, active, talkative, self-confident, perceptive and creative than usual. As the mood swings higher and one speeds up, the following symptoms may be seen:
*extreme irritability
*rapid, unpredictable emotional changes
*racing thoughts, jumping from one topic to another and talking much faster than usual
*overreaction to stimuli, misinterpretation of events; distortion of the meaning of ordinary comments
*overspending, going on buying sprees, going into heavy debt
*grandiosity, inflated self-esteem, exaggerated self-importance
*excessive energy, on the go without stopping
decreased need for sleep, feeling that one doesn't need sleep
*increased sexual drive, sexual indiscretions, indiscriminate picking of sexual partners
*poor judgment, not recognizing that one is ill, refusing treatment, blaming others for everything that goes wrong
*loss of touch with reality, perhaps hearing voices (hallucinations) or having strange ideas (delusions)
The approach to treatment of biploar disorder can sometimes differ quite markedly from that for major depressive disorder , as treatment of both manic and depressive phases needs to be considered.

Editors Note: There is no "cure" for Bipolar Disorder; however, with the proper medications the disorder does become better able to control. Usually once the meds are stopped the symptoms come back and may be harder to deal with. One major factor in treating Bipolar Disorder is that many times the patient will stop taking their meds and going to therapy because they start to feel "normal". They can go for months after stopping treatments and be feeling good, but then the episodes start back up again and life on the "ROLLER COASTER" begins once again. Remember that Bipolar disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and the person isn't acting in this way on purpose. Without the medications and therapies we have little to no control over these emotions and it wreaks havoc on all aspects of our lives. If you believe you may have any of these conditions please contact your doctor. NEVER try to self-diagnose yourself.
