In the 1980 Olympics, the USA hockey team beat the Soviet Union to go to the gold medal game. The Russians were heavily favored and actually beat the US 10-3 in an exhibition at Madison Square Garden days before the Olympics. Some say this was the greatest moment in American hockey history. The US Olympic Team also won in Squaw Valley in 1960, respectively, but this game was during the peak of the Cold War and these were the mighty Soviets. Most players on the Soviet team were never seen outside the country because the top Russian players played in the Russian league, which made the US team guessing who they were going to face. They, of course, pulled it out and went on to beat the Fins in the Gold Medal game.
