It's often been said that the cars were the real stars of "The Dukes of Hazzard." That may be overstated, but anybody who watched "Dukes" will tell you the vehicles in Hazzard became cast members just like their human counterparts. The thought of an episode of "Dukes" without General Lee, Cooter's tow truck or Rosco's partol car was unthinkable.

Along with those main star cars, a lot of interesting vehicles blasted through Hazzard County. The section toward the bottom showcases some of the secondary vehicles on the show. Some of them were only on screen a few moments and are very hard to identify. If any one can help verify or correct any of this information I'd appreciate it.

The General Lee is the most famous stock car to every come out of the South. In 1976, Bo and Luke Duke were looking for a car that would handle the powerful racing engine they had built for the Hazzard Road Race Championship. They found it in a Capitol City junkyard. It was a black 1969 Dodge Charger that had been used as a getaway car. It had been wrecked in the chase and sold for scrap. The boys bought the car and with the help of Daisy, Jesse and Cooter they set to work. In two days, the body work was done, the engine was installed and the car was painted using the only paint Cooter had - orange. The car had an "01" on the door that according to Bo meant when you start with nothing it's number 1 all the way. To add an extra touch, they boys put a rebel flag on the roof and a Dixie horn up front. Uncle Jesse named the car "General Lee" and a legend was born. With the fighting spirit of the South pounding his pistons and turning his tires, the General Lee won every race, jumped over every obstacle and saved Hazzard County on a weekly basis. Over the years, the General stopped being a car and became a member of the Duke family. Even Boss, who hated that "big orange clunker car," had to admit that the General Lee was the top car in Hazzard.

Bo and Luke drove the General until the time finally came for them to leave Hazzard. Before the boys left, they stored General Lee in Cooter's Garage. When Cooter when to Congress he moved the General to his storage barn along with all his junk cars. In 1994, he told local mechanic Red Perkins to take the junk cars and Red mistakenly took General Lee as well.

When everyone came home in 1997, the Dukes were tricked into an overland car race against crooked land developer Mama Max. When they went to get the General they found him missing. Cooter remembered selling the cars to Red so they went to his garage. General Lee was there being used as a home for a rooster and was in pretty bad shape. Red's daughter Mavis said Red was going to send the General to the crusher but he stopped because the General was "just too pretty to destroy." Bo, Luke, Cooter and Mavis worked all night and got the General back into fighting shape in time to win the race and save the Duke farm. Now, whenever Bo and Luke visit Hazzard they get the General out and race him just like old times.

The Hazzard Police Department went through more patrol cars than any other police department, real or imagined. Between Rosco, Enos and Cletus hundreds of patrol cars met their doom on the back roads of Hazzard County. Open ditches, sewer pipes, telephone poles, unfinished bridges - these obstacles and many others found themselves plugged up with the still-spinning wheels of a distinctive white car with a star on the side.

There were several kinds of patrol cars used over the years, but by far the Dodge Monaco and Plymouth Fury cars were the most widely used and most recognizable. All Hazzard patrol cars have the same design. They have all white paint with Sheriff star decals on both front doors. Below those decals are the "Hazzard County" decals. On the top of the front fenders and rear quarters are "Sheriff" decals. On the roof is a Sheriff lightbar with red and blue lights. The cars have PA systems and CBs. The cars have blackwall tires with baby moon hubcaps.

Dixie was a 1980 CJ-7 Jeep that belonged to Daisy. She recieved it in "The Runaway" as a bridesmaid gift from millionaire C.J. Holmes after her Roadrunner was destroyed. Originally, Dixie was a Golden Eagle edition Jeep. It had the Golden Eagle on the hood and the Golden Eagle script on the side of the hood. It had steel doors with personalized "Dixie" script and daisy flowers on those doors. Later on, the doors and the Golden Eagle script were removed and the Dixie script was put on both sides of the hood.

Although she never got the spotlight like General Lee, Dixie became as much a part of the Duke family as he did. However, by 1997 Daisy replaced Dixie with a new motorcycle.

Daisy drove a 1974 Plymouth Roadrunner in the first few episodes and then a 1971 Plymouth Satellite Sebring for the rest of the first season and part of the second season. Originally, this car didn't belong to any specific Duke, but later on it was clear that this was Daisy's car.

All the Roadrunners were yellow, had a black accent stripe across the roof and down the sides, and had black accent stripes on the hood. In the first season, a 1974 body style Roadrunner was used. This car had a distictive bulge hood that was only used on the 1974 model. It also had a flush quad-headlight grill and chrome bumpers with black bumper stops. In the second season, a 1971 body style Sebring Satellite was used. The accents began in the front and ran toward the windshield on each side of the hood. This car also had a recessed chrome wraparound grill.

Daisy's car was destroyed while Bo and Luke were running from some of millionaire C.J. Holmes hired goons. The brakes went out and Bo and Luke jumped out before the car plummeted off a cliff.

Jesse's pickup was as reliable as Jesse, himself. Jesse's pickup was first seen in "High Octane." It's seen briefly from the courthouse window. It was a white stepside Ford pickup. Apparently, Jesse got rid of this truck and got a new one, which we first see in "Luke's Love Story." It is a 1973 white Ford F-100. This is the truck that Jesse drives for the rest of his life. It was always dirty and it wasn't the fastest thing around, but that old Ridge Runner could really make that thing move when he wanted to.

Sooner or later, every Hazzard vehicle took a ride on the back of Cooter's tow truck. Over the years, Cooter had many different trucks. The first was a brown Chevy truck with a wooden bumper.

The second truck was a yellow Ford with a custom tow bed. It had the towing arm on the rear bumper and had various pinstripes on the body.

The third truck was another Chevy pickup like the first truck except this one was gray with a white top. It was a regular pickup with no towing arm. In the early years, Cooter also owned a Chevy flatbed truck.

The fourth and fifth trucks, which are the most familiar, were blue and white Chevy and Ford trucks with a bed-mounted towing arm.

In "Welcome Back Bo 'N' Luke" the boys old buddy Petey Willis comes through town with his 1968 Chevy Chevelle race car. It's very likely this is the same car was earlier used as Cooter's #76. The engine shots show both cars are set up the same with dual four barrel carbs on a high rise intake with high gold valve covers. This car is wrecked during this episode.
