Hazzard County had no shortage of colorful characters. The Dukes, the Hoggs, the Hazzard Police — they made up a town unlike any in the South, or the North! Full-time residents or simply visitors — everyone who passed through Hazzard was unlike anyone we'd ever seen before. Here are some of the characters who made our Friday nights in Hazzard so memorable.

Little Cousin

Lucas K. Duke is the oldest of the Duke cousins. Luke came to live with Uncle Jesse along with Bo and Daisy when all their parents were killed in the same car accident. After graduating from high school, Luke enlisted in the Marines where he achieved the rank of sergeant and became divisional boxing champion.

After coming home, Luke joined Uncle Jesse and Bo in the family moonshining business. In 1978, Bo and Luke were caught making a moonshine run. They were placed on probation after Jesse made a deal with the government. While on probation, the boys weren't allowed to leave Hazzard County without the permission of their probation officer. So, Luke and Bo began working the farm with Uncle Jesse and Daisy and spending the rest of their time becoming racing legends behind the wheel of the General Lee. Luke did most of the mechanical work while Bo handled the driving.

In 1983, Luke and Bo left Hazzard to become professional drivers on the NASCAR circuit. They retired from the circuit after one year with a string of victories. Luke stayed on the farm until sometime after 1986, when he left Hazzard and became a smokejumper for the Forest Service.

Whenever the Dukes come up against big trouble, it is almost always Luke who comes up with the plan that gets them out of the fire.

Beauregard "Bo" Duke is the youngest of the Duke cousins. Impressionable, headstrong and often naive, Bo became more notorious than his cousin, Luke, as a ladies man. Bo was a standout on the Hazzard High football team. When Bo graduated he took up the family moonshining legacy with Luke until they were both caught and put on probation. They didn't run shine anymore but Bo continued burning up backroads and dirt tracks in the General Lee.

Bo left Hazzard with Luke in 1983 to live their dream of racing on the NASCAR circuit. They returned after a year because they missed the life Hazzard had to offer. Bo stayed on the farm until sometime after 1986, where at some point he made a wrong turn on his way to the Opry and wound up on a racetrack again. Bo returned to racing professionally and remains a force on the track.

Walking on the most beautiful legs in all of Georgia, Daisy Duke strutted her way into the hearts and minds of every boy in Hazzard, especially the heart of Deputy Enos Strate. Daisy spent her youth dreaming of being a singer like her hero, Dolly Parton. In 1976, Daisy made a deal with Boss. She'd go to work at the Boar's Nest if Boss would give Jesse a loan so Bo and Luke could buy General Lee (what a deal).

Like her cousins, Daisy is an incredible backroads racer. She even spent some time as a professional driver. She's also been a police officer, a reporter and a pilot.

One of Daisy's biggest wishes was to find a man to spend her life with. After a string of bad relationships and two near trips down the aisle (one with Jamie Lee Hogg and one with Enos), Daisy finally became a wife. Sometime after 1986, she left Hazzard and got married to a man named L.D. Sadly, the marriage didn't last. Around 1997, Daisy enrolled at Duke University and earned a degree in ecology. At the 1997 Hazzard Homecoming, Daisy and Enos nearly made their second trip down the aisle. However, after a chance meeting with her ex-husband at the ceremony, Daisy decided she needed some more time before trying marriage again.

Jesse L. Duke was one of the most famous moonshiners in Hazzard County history. A member of the famed Ridge Runners, which included J.D. Hogg, Jesse and his car, Black Tillie, tore up the roads of Hazzard for over 40 years delivering the finest moonshine ever. Sometime in the 1960s, Jesse and his late wife, Livenia, took in their nephews Bo and Luke and thier niece Daisy after the kids lost their parents in a car accident. When the boys got old enough they joined Jesse in the moonshine business.

In 1978, Bo and Luke were caught on a whiskey run. To save them from prison, Jesse swallowed a lifetime of pride and brought the Dukes 200-year moonshine tradition to an end. He made a deal with the government that if they would give the boys probation he'd quit the moonshine business. With the whiskey business gone, the Dukes became full-time farmers. While they never had much money after that, the Dukes were rich in love and with Jesse's hand to guide them, Bo, Luke and Daisy grew up to be resourceful adults.

Jesse remained on the family farm until his passing in 1997.

Cletus Hogg is J.D. Hogg's third cousin twice removed. Cletus filled in as a reserve Hazzard deputy until Enos left to join the Los Angeles Metro Squad. He then became a full-time deputy. When it came to helping Boss and Rosco frame the Dukes, Cletus often let his 1/8th Hogg blood be overruled by his honesty and helped them out of Boss' schemes.

Cletus left the Hazzard Police in 1982. Sometime prior to 1997, Cletus returned to become Chief Deputy, driver and dog man when Rosco became Boss after J.D.'s passing.

There was never a more honest man than Enos Strate. Enos grew up with Bo and Luke. His father ran moonshine with their fathers until the Strates returned to farming. After high school, Enos joined the Hazzard Police where he gained a reputation as the most honest deputy in Hazzard, which was easy since most of the time he was the only deputy.

In all his life, Enos had two dreams — to become a big city lawman and win the heart of Daisy Duke. In 1980, one of those dreams came true. Enos left Hazzard and joined the California Metro Squad. In 1982, Enos returned to Hazzard, became a deputy again and kept after his other dream — to marry Daisy. It seemed like Enos' second dream would come true in 1985 when Daisy asked Enos to marry her. Unfortunatly, she only did it to keep from testifying against Enos on bank robbery charges. After everything was cleared up, Daisy insisted on going through with the wedding, but this time it was Enos who called it off when he developed "happiness hives."

In 1986, Enos left Hazzard for the second time, rejoined the California Metro Squad and became one of it's top cops. In 1997, he returned to Hazzard to ask Daisy to marry him for the second time. She said yes and although Enos and the boys had to save her from kidnappers, they did make it down the aisle. But, a chance meeting with her ex-husband caused to her to back out of it. Enos agreed to continue his 33-year wait for her until she was ready.

Cooter Davenport is the most legendary grease monkey ever to turn a wrench in Hazzard County. If it has wheels, Cooter can fix it. Although with some of the tricks he's pulled putting the General Lee back together, some might call him a magician instead of a mechanic. A Duke a heart, Cooter rode shotgun with the Dukes on many times as they shucked, jived and jumped their way out of Boss and Rosco's clutches.

Cooter continued as the top mechanic in Hazzard until sometime after 1986 when he made the leap from crankshafts to Congress. Cooter occasionally returns to Hazzard to meet up with the Dukes for some lead-footed hijinx.

Rosco Purvis Coltrane was a straight-as-an-arrow lawman for 20 years until 1978 when his pension was voted down in a Hazzard County bond election. Overnight, Rosco became the best lawman money could buy — and the man who bought him was Boss Hogg. Although he readily went along with his brother-in-law's schemes and went to great pains to frame the Dukes, Rosco would never take part in anything that would get anybody hurt.

Rosco's loves were hot pursuit, chasin' Dukes, helping his "Little Fat Buddy" and spending time with his long-earred companion, Flash. Rosco continued his childlike admiration of Boss Hogg to the next level when he became the Boss of Hazzard after J.D.'s passing in 1994. Working from Boss' memoirs, Rosco continues to carry on Boss' high standard of low villainy. In 2000, one of Boss' old nemesis, Ezra Bushmaster, returned to Hazzard to try and take Boss' empire from Rosco. Whether he succeeds will depend less on Rosco and more on the Dukes.

Boss Jefferson Davis Hogg was born on the dirt floor of a sharecropper's shack. From those humble beginnings, J.D. schemed and stole his way to becoming one of the richest men in Georgia and the undesputed Boss of Hazzard County. In his youth, Boss became a member of the famed Ridge Runners moonshiners along with his childhood friend Jesse Duke. In his moonshine car, the Gray Ghost, Boss outran the law through the backwoods of Georgia.

Somewhere along the line, Boss let his greedy nature take over and sacrificed all his values in pusuit of money. This put a rift between him and Jesse that caused them to become enemies. Boss never stopped trying to steal Jesse's farm and send Bo, Luke and Daisy to jail. Although they often opposed each other, Boss and Jesse kept a piece of their friendship alive. Boss was greedy, but he was never so evil that he wished anyone physical harm, particularly the Dukes. Boss' good side often one out when his schemes got out of hand. In their own way, everyone loved Boss.

He continued his lovable larceny until his passing in 1994. If Heaven has a bank, Boss is surely trying to get the keys.

For seven years, country music legend Waylon Jennings led us through the exploits of the Duke family as they fought the system in Hazzard County. As he told their tales, it always seemed like Waylon knew the Dukes personally. In 1985, we found out he did.

Waylon finally came to Hazzard in person and met up with the Dukes. Over the family kitchen table, we learned that many years ago Waylon had his guitar stolen right before his first professional show. With no money to buy another guitar, Waylon thought his dream was over. Right then, a stranger came up and gave him the money he needed to buy another guitar. That stranger was Jesse Duke. Waylon never forgot what Jesse did for him and the two became friends.

Waylon passed away in 2002 due to complications from diabetes. Waylon the man may be gone but his spirit lives on in the incredible music he left behind. He touched millions of people with his talent, and he will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans as the "voice" of the Dukes of Hazzard.

A former Detroit test driver, Coy Duke and his cousin, Vance, stormed back into Hazzard in 1982 after seven years away. Coy and Vance came to live with Jesse after Bo and Luke left for the NASCAR circuit. Coy immediately took to driving the General Lee, which he had apparently done after Bo and Luke first built him. He and Vance held off Boss' schemes until Bo and Luke returned later that year, when he and Vance left to help some other Duke relatives.

Like his cousin Luke, Vance spent time in the Marines — Merchant Marines that is. After leaving the service, Vance joined up with his cousin Coy, eventually coming back to Hazzard in 1982 after a seven-year absence to help Uncle Jesse after Bo and Luke's departure. Also like Luke, Vance seemed to do the majority of the planning when the Dukes needed a way out of a tight spot. Vance left Hazzard with Coy later in 1982 to help out their Aunt Bessie and Uncle Albert.

Lulu Hogg is J.D.'s long-suffering wife and Rosco's sister. A large woman with a heart of gold, Lulu was loved by everyone in Hazzard. Although he sometimes acted like he didn't, there was no one Boss cared more for than his darling "Angel Food Cake." And while she loved her "Chickabiddy," Lulu never really caught on to Boss' nasty schemes.

Flash P. Coltrane is the loyal, long-earred friend of Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane. Raised from a puppy, Rosco treated Flash more as his baby than his dog. He got Flash from an ad in the Police Gazette magazine. Rosco heaped love and attention on his beloved "Velvet Ears." Flash was probably the only being in the world who truly loved and understood Rosco. Although it sometimes wasn't clear if Flash was Rosco's "daughter" or "son," it was always clear that Flash was loyal to her "daddy." It also seemed like Flash was the only one in Hazzard who knew what was going on!

Flash remained by Rosco's side until sometime before 1997 when she passed on.

Sheriff "Big" Ed Little is the law in Chickasaw County. No one was ever anxious to get on his bad side. Little's dream was to put Bo and Luke in jail before Rosco, which he nearly did on several occasions. The only person spared the wrath of Big Ed's temper was his wife, Rachel.

Miz Emma Tisdale was the motorcycle-ridin' postmistress of Hazzard county. She also worked part-time at the Hazzard Gazette and owned the only cab service in Hazzard County. While other people her age were in wheelchairs, Miz Tisdale was pullin' wheelies. She also had a hankerin' for Uncle Jesse that just wouldn't stop.

She was always ready to help out the Dukes, especially Jesse. Miz Tisdale passed away in 2003.

If there was ever a Hogg that could hold his own with Boss in the "crookedness" category, it's Hughie Hogg. Hughie first appears in "Arrest Jesse Duke" when he was appointed Sheriff in Rosco's absence. Hughie is a junior version of Boss. He ran cons and scams in grade school. He even went to college and studied criminology to become a better criminal. Hughie has even managed to scam his Uncle Boss a couple of times. Nobody in Hazzard is safe when Hughie comes to town.

Doc Petticord first appeared in "Double Sting." He was the classic country doctor - kind but cantankerous. Doc Petticord took care of everyone in Hazzard for many years until he finally retired.

Doc Carney was J.D. Hogg's physician for many years. He first appeared in Hazzard in "The Late J.D. Hogg."

Doc Appleby first appeared in Hazzard in "Coltrane vs. Duke." Doc was a trusted friend of everyone in Hazzard. Throughout his years, Doc covered everything from delivering babies to trying to cure Luke from mind-altering drugs. In his years in Hazzard, Doc saw a little more action than your average country doctor. Doc continued his practice for many years.

Doc Appleby passed away in 2003 but his memory lives on in all those he helped.

Elmore Vincent made one visit to Hazzard when he took over the role of Doc Appleby for "Dear Diary."

Three-time NASCAR Grand National Champion - and Bo and Luke's favorite driver - Cale Yarborough appears in Hazzard in "Dukes Meet Cale Yarborough." Cale is in the area testing some secret racing equipment and meets up with Bo and Luke, who help him avoid the unscrupulous Jethro Brothers who are out to steal his invention. Cale's Hazzard connection is revealled when Cale tells the boys he learned a lot about cars as a kid from a local Hazzard mechanic named Skeeter. Skeeter also used to work on Black Tillie with Uncle Jesse.

Cale kept in touch with the Dukes for years after and even returned to visit a sick fan in "Cale Yarborough Comes to Hazzard." Like his other visit to Hazzard, Cale ran into trouble when he and the boys were falsely accused of bank robbery. The three managed to clear themselves and Cale made it to the hospital in time to meet his fan.

In "Baa Baa White Sheep" we meet Abraham Lincoln Hogg. Abe was J.D. Hogg's twin brother and the shame of the Hogg clan because he played fair and prefered to give his money away. Five years previous to this episode, Boss had Abe declared legally dead when he disappeared in Africa. What happened was Abe got caught up in so many business ventures (oil fields in South America, emerald mines in Venezuala, lumber mills in Brazil, cattle ranches in Argentina) that he lost track of time. Like Boss, Abe is an old friend of Jesse's and the two got back together on Abe's return to Hazzard.

Like his twin, Abe passed away in 1994.

The first non-Hazzard Duke appears in "Along Came a Duke." He is Jeb Stuart Duke. He's another Duke cousin who lives in Claridge County. Where his cousins are four-wheelers, Jeb is a motorcycle ace. Like Bo and Luke, Jeb is on probation. Luke mentions they all went on probation together, so it's assumed Jeb ran moonshine like the boys.

Dewey Hogg is introduced in "How to Succeed in Hazzard." He is Hughie's older brother and is a proud supporter of the crooked Hogg family values. Like Hughie, Dewey grew up with the Dukes and tormented them at every opportunity. As children, Dewey tried to push Daisy off the roof of the house in a soapbox airplane. He also cheated her out of first place in the All-School Spelling Bee, which Daisy is still upset about. Dewey, like Boss and Hughie, started his scams young. In the third grade, Dewey faked the Bubonic Plague and got the school closed for a week. In the ninth grade, Dewey sold all the school chairs and desks to get two moonshine stills. As Waylon said, "Dewey makes his Uncle Boss look respectible."

B.B. is Cooter's cousin who filled in for him at the garage from time to time. B.B. first appeared in "Granny Annie."

L.B. is another of Cooter's cousins. He also filled in for Cooter when he was away from the garage. L.B. first appeared in "Duke of Duke" and appeared in several other episodes. He also bears a striking resemblence to Dobro Dulin from "One Armed Bandits."

Jud Kane first appeared in "Brotherly Love." Jud is Luke Duke's baby brother. Right after Jud was born, the hospital he was in caught fire. Everyone assumed he died in the fire, but he had been saved by a lonely nurse who decided to keep Jud as her own. Like Luke, Jud joined the Marines and learned to box. Jud went professional and became a great fighter. Many years later, Jud's "mother" told him on her deathbed about his real family. At the same time, Jud was approached by a crooked gambler to throw a big fight. When he refused the gambler tried to kill him. Jud went to Hazzard and found Luke. He and the rest of the Dukes helped him out of his jam. Jud left Hazzard with a new brother and a new chance with his career.

The head of the Hogg clan comes to town in "Big Daddy." Boss' Big Daddy visits his son to see what kind of man he's become. While it first seems Big Daddy is as straight as Abe Hogg, we find out he's more crooked than Boss ever was. Big Daddy is one of the biggest scam artists the south has ever seen, next to his son.

Big Daddy passed away in 2003.

We get to meet Lulu and Rosco's older sister Hortense in "The Return of Hughie Hogg." Hortense is a no-nonsense woman who doesn't think very highly of Boss.

Jude Emery is a Texas Ranger who came to Hazzard, in his self-titled episode, in pursuit of bandit Russell "Snake" Harmon. Jude was an unconventional lawman. He drove a Korean War surplus jeep and carried a saddle as backup. He carried his close in the back of his guitar and his gun didn't work. Jude and Daisy took a likin' to each other, but like all classic cowboys, Jude rode off into the sunset at the end of the episode.

Jamie Lee Hogg is Boss' nephew who visits Hazzard in "Mrs. Daisy Hogg." Jamie is fabulously wealthy, like all the Hoggs, and at first appearance seems to have made all his money legally. His smooth charm and good manners even impress Daisy enough to get her to agree to marry him - marking a potential earth-shattering event in the Duke-Hogg feud. However, Jamie Lee's true Hogg nature comes through when its revealled he's the head of a major counterfitting operation. When his partners turn on him and threaten Daisy, Jamie Lee does step up to defend her, but that doesn't keep him from being arrested for his illegal activities.

In "Cooter's Girl," Cooter is reintroduced to his 18-year-old daughter, NancyLou. Years ago, Cooter and local girl Beverly Hibbs ran away and got married. Back then, Cooter was still somewhat of a wild man. Beverly's daddy had the marriage annulled, but not before Beverly got pregnant. Because of his wild side, both she and Cooter agreed it would be better if she raised NancyLou alone. Beverly later remarried. When she turned 18, NancyLou was told about her daddy and came to Hazzard to learn about him. After a typical Hazzard rough start, NancyLou and Cooter finally got to spend time with each other and begin becoming a part of each other's lives.

Sheriff Lester Crabb, the "Traveling Sheriff," came to Hazzard in "Treasure of Hazzard" to replace Rosco. Lester was a very different type of Sheriff. According to Waylon, "When Lester walks by babies cry, flowers whilt and beer just naturally goes flat." Lester's motto was "Orders is orders," which would seem to make him a good fit with Boss. However, Lester suddenly left Hazzard for parts unknown.

Grady Byrd was Boss' cousin and night watchman at the gravel pits for 20 years before he was finally given the chance to fill in for Rosco. Grady first appeared in "Officer Daisy Duke." While Grady did his best to live up to Boss' low expecations, it quickly became clear Grady wasn't going to be a success at his new job. Grady left the job an episode later.

Grady passed away in 1994.

Sheriff Buster Moon replaced Grady Byrd and made his only appearance in Hazzard in "Return of the Ridge Raiders." To this day, no one really knows what prompted Boss to give Buster Rosco's job.

Every man wanted Daisy Duke. So imagine how shocked we were to meet the man who left her! Daisy's ex-husband, L.D., appears at the end of "The Dukes of Hazzard Reunion." After leaving Daisy, he became the bus driver for a country band called "The Chick Weeds." We don't really learn anything about L.D., but we know if he could break sweet Daisy's heart we don't like him.

Don Williams became the Balladeer for the first Dukes reunion movie. Like Waylon, Don was only heard in voiceover and never appeared onscreen.

Mac Davis took over duties as the Balladeer for the second Dukes movie in 2000. He was the first Balladeer to be seen onscreen talking to the audience.

Years ago after the Dukes left Hazzard, Ezra Bushmaster was a business partner of Boss Hogg's. According to Rosco, when Boss found out that Ezra was even more crooked than he was, he had Ezra run out of Hazzard in disgrace. In 2000, Ezra returned for the Hazzard Hoe-Down and set up a revenge scheme to cheat the town out of a new hospital. His plan failed, thanks to the Dukes, and when last heard of Ezra was running for Sheriff and Boss of Hazzard so he could continue his evil ways.

Alex was Boss' loyal driver. He took Boss's sass and that's probably what made him last the longest of all the drivers.

Mabel is Boss' cousin who runs the Hazzard Phone Company. If it was ever said on a Hazzard phone, Mabel heard it, and then quickly told it to Boss.

Waylon said it best, "Ace was Hazzard's number two car salesman. There weren't no other, but old Ace couldn't be first at anything." Ace was partners with Boss in their crooked car lot.

Mama Josephine Max is a big real estate con-woman who tried to con Rosco and the rest of Hazzard into investing in a theme park on land she really wanted to mine for ore. The tables turned when she found out Rosco planted the ore to get her to invest her money with him. Since Rosco got the plan from Boss Hogg's memoirs, she really got outwitted by him. Mama Max got sent to jail for kidnapping Daisy during the Hazzard Homecoming.

Bertha Jo is one of Daisy's oldest friends. At the 1997 Hazzard Homecoming she not only won the Hazzard Tough Person Contest, she also helped rescue Daisy from her kidnappers. She also got to tie the knot with her boyfriend, Bubba, when Daisy called off her wedding.

Sometime after Flash passed on, Rosco found himself needing another "Velvet Ears." That was Toodles. We only saw Toodles briefly and we don't know if it's a boy or a girl, but it's clear Toodles was cut from the same cloth as dear old Flash. Rosco kept Toodles until sometime before 2000.

Emery Potter is the Part-Time Hazzard County Registrar and Chief Teller of the Hazzard Bank. Emery is a softspoken man with a low tolerance for anything exciting, like walking too fast.

Gussie Peabody took of for Mabel as operator at the Hazzard Telephone Company. If you wanted to keep a secret in Hazzard, having Gussie place the call wasn't the way to do it.

Jerimiah Duke was Jesse's Great-Great Grandaddy. He lived on the Duke farm in 1872 with his wife Jenny. It is likely he is a decendent of Caleb Duke, who is mentioned in "Treasure of Hazzard." He is the uncle of Hank, Joe and Dixie Duke.

Joe Duke is Bo's Great Granddaddy. He was not a native of Hazzard, then known as Sleepy City, but he did visit there in 1872 to help Jerimiah Duke fight off Thaddeus Hogg's attempts to steal the Duke farm. Dixie Duke was Daisy's Great Grandma. She visited Sleepy City in 1872 to help Jerimiah and Jenny Duke save the Duke farm from Thaddeus B. Hogg. She teamed up with Hank Duke and Joe Duke to defeat Thaddeus and his hired gunslingers, Frank and Jesse James.

Jeeter Davenport was the blacksmith of Sleepy City during 1872. Jeeter fought for the Confederate Army in the Civil War and took part in the Second Battle of Bull Run. Jeeter is some relation to Cooter, but it isn't specified how.

Thaddeus Hogg is Boss' Great Grandaddy, according to Boss. It's more likely that he is Boss' Great-Great Grandaddy as that is Jerimiah Duke's relation to Jesse and the two are nearly the same age. Thaddeus ran the Hogg dynasty in Hazzard, then known as Sleepy City, in the 1870s. He owned everything, including Sheriff Rufus Z. Coltrane. His goal was to make Sleepy City a booming cattle town. He blamed the Farmers Duke for taking up good cattle land, thereby causing ranchers to move on. In relation to the times, Thaddeus was more willing to cause some destruction than Boss, as he had the Duke's barn burned and hired the Frank and Jesse James as enforcers. However, he did share Boss' desire to avoid gunplay. His plans were stopped by the efforts of Joe, Hank and Dixie Duke.

Rufus Z. Coltrane was the short arm of the law in Sleepy City in 1872. He tried to keep a tough image by wearing an eyepatch, which he didn't need. Like Rosco, Rufus was loyal to his boss, Thaddeus Hogg, and played his part in Thaddeus' schemes. While clearly related to Rosco, it's not explained what that relation is.

After one day in Hazzard, Little Cousin said goodbye to his friends, boarded his ship and went home.
